Gas Natural Fenosa operates in the Portuguese gas and electricity sales market through its subsidiaries Gas Natural Comercializadora and Unión Fenosa Comercial.
In 2011, the company held its position as the number one independent operator in the natural gas market in Portugal, with a contracted customer portfolio of 3.4 TWh.
The company obtained a licence to market gas in Portugal in the first quarter of 2008 after asking to be registered as a marketing agent for Gas Natural Comercializadora, making it one of the first foreign companies to be registered as a marketing agent for natural gas on the Portuguese market and the first major European gas company to get this licence.
It was also the first agent on the secondary market and helps develop this market alongside the main Portuguese companies.
The company achieved another big milestone in the market liberalisation process in Portugal when in July 2008 it signed up the first industrial customer to enter the free market in Portugal. In 2009, it consolidated its position as the leading independent operator in the natural gas market in Portugal with sales of 2,200,000 MWh.
Presence in the Electricity Market
Gas Natural Fenosa's position as an energy operator in Portugal benefitted from the success of its integration with Unión Fenosa, thanks to the electricity company being firmly established in that country. Unión Fenosa Comercial has been operating in the electricity free market in Portugal since 2004 and has offices in Lisbon and Oporto.
The businesses of the two companies complement each other very well and this has enabled Gas Natural Fenosa to accelerate the pace of its gas and electricity marketing activities in Portugal and has brought it closer to customers.
With 3.2 million customers, Gas Natural Fenosa is the fourth largest operator in the Portuguese electricity market and the fastest-growing firm in terms of sales in the small and medium businesses segment, growing by 50% en 2011.
