In 2007, Gas Natural Fenosa acquired a 64% stake in the company Kangra Coal, proprietor of the Savmore coal mine in South Africa.

Gas Natural Fenosa is responsible for operating the Savmore coal field in the region of Mpumalanga, 315 kilometres to the north east of the country's capital, Johannesburg.
It is basically an underground mine, although there are also reserves on the surface. Each year it produces three million tonnes and it is estimated to have in the region of 100 million tonnes of coal and anthracite reserves.
The other company shareholders are Shanduka (Black Economic Empowerment), with 26% of the capital, and Kangra Group, which controls the remaining 10%.
Kangra Coal has a 2.3% stake in the Richard Bay Coal Terminal, the largest coal export port in the world, which enables it to export, together with the quota from Shanduka, a total of 1.9 million tonnes of the mineral each year.
